Requirements

To start with, there are two types of permits you may need to choose between:

  • Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship License

This is, perhaps, your first step in the journey as a plumber. Evidently, to start on the right path, you will have to start with an apprenticeship program.

Among the common demands are:

  • Nevada driver’s license
  • Social Security Card
  • Certificate of Birth
  • Diploma
  • Training program participation proof
  • Prior practice proof (if any)

Normally, the duration includes almost four years of training (approximately 8, 000 hours), and courses lasting again four years. The application process does not require any compulsory payments.

In fact, it is not difficult to find an apprentice job in the state. For finding one, you can conduct the same search tools as for any other job (LinkedIn, Glassdoor, etc.).

As to the education part, there are several options, in fact. The applicants can choose the most suitable one, regarding tuition fees and other aspects. Generally, the most popular educational centers for obtaining plumbing skills are:

  • NTI (National Technical Institute)
  • Western Nevada College
  • Plumbers and Pipefitters of Local 525

The skills and experience accumulated as an apprentice lead a step higher. This is where you again face rules and terms to satisfy.

Journeyman License

If you are reading this, then you have already enough knowledge and experience in your working path. Yet, there are always better opportunities in any sphere. Thus, to make the best out of your specialization, you can work for gaining another permit.

So, what do you need to know about Journeyman licensure?

One can be a valid applicant if he/she has four years of solid experience within an apprenticeship program.
To be able to apply, the resident should submit the following:

  • Application form
  • Proof of experience
  • Compulsory payment
  • $300 initial fee
  • $600 annual fee for renewal
  • ID

Exams

Generally, all the applications are reviewed by the NV Board of Plumbing. After the Board reviews and confirms the documents, they set the day of the upcoming examination. The latter is comprised of two main sections:

  • Construction management exam
  • Trade exam

The decision upon taking them is up to the applicant. Commonly, it is possible to take them at once with a total cost of $140. Anyway, there is the option of taking them separately. Still, in this case, the cost will be higher – $95 for each.

  • Administration and procedure
  • Vents
  • Drainage
  • Fixing

Renewal and Reciprocity

Commonly, you should refresh your permit upon its expiration. In addition, to complete the renewal process, plumbers pass either an 8-hour extra seminar or fill in a test of 40 questions.
As to reciprocity, at the moment it is limited to several states only:

  • California
  • Arizona
  • Utah

However, even in the case of the states listed above, there are still certain restrictions and conditions to meet.

Salary

Usually, for starters, the average salary per hour is about $22. Anyway, for those who have worked in the field for more than five years, the pay is considerably higher, ranging up to $30.51 per hour.
